1988 Dodge Dakota
Why This Car Is Special
The Dodge Dakota is a mid-size pickup truck from the Dodge Truck division. The Dakota has always been sized above the compact Ford Ranger and Chevrolet S-10, but below the full-sized pickups such as Dodge's own Ram. It is a conventional design with body-on-frame construction and a leaf spring/live axle rear end.
If you want a brand new one, the 1988 Dodge Dakota truck we have here at Skyway Classics is about as close as you will ever get, because it only has 2550 miles on it!
Our mint Dakota has the tried-and-tested 2.2 liter engine that was adapted for rear wheel drive. It had 96 horsepower with 121 lb-ft of torque. Ours looks as it did when it was brand new, as does the whole truck!
The Dakota has an 8 foot cargo box with a payloads of 2,550 pounds with trailer towing up to 5,500 pounds. The long bed was specifically designed to carry 4x8 panels with the tailgate closed and has provisions for stakes and tie-downs. The tailgate can be easily removed for longer loads.
The front suspension on rear drive models was fully independent, with coil springs and upper/lower control arms, while leaf springs were used in the rear. The Dakota was the first American-made pickup with standard rack and pinion steering. Power front ventilated disc and rear self-adjusting drum brakes stops it.
The Dakota has cloth seats with vinyl trim and the wide cab holds three passengers, seat backs tilt forward to reveal a large storage area. It has a black steering wheel and column with black carpet and floor mounted 4-speed shifter.
All factory gauges work as well as the factory AM/FM radio. Even the stock factory cigarette lighter is still in place in this time-capsule of a truck.
Of course, the yellow paint job looks as new, as does the painted bed, chrome bumpers, trim, badging, and it rolls on factory whitewall type tires with the factory wheel covers to. The length of the Dakota makes it easier to maneuver around the city and in parking lots than the more unwieldy larger pickups.
Not much else can be said about this 1988 Dodge Dakota truck we have here at Skyway Classics but as stated above it is about as close as you will ever get to owning a brand new Dakota with only 2550 miles on it.
