When production started in 1979, the Fox platform “Foxbody” Mustang was an instant hit with Mustang fans. A total about-face from the Mustang II that preceded it, this generation of Mustang was rapidly getting back to the classic Mustang roots! In 1983, the Fox Mustang got its first facelift, and then another in 1987, making this 1990 Mustang LX hatchback a solid example of the final Foxes!
The outside condition of this car is almost astonishing. While it does have minor paint scratches (like perhaps from a car wash), and is wearing a repaint in a color slightly more orange than the original red, the overall exterior condition is presentable and attractive. The red-orange paint is eye-catching and pairs well with the repainted dark black plastic and black moldings. On this surface, being an LX hatchback, this Mustang is somewhat subtle and may not immediately register as a performance car to many. To us, the ability to fly somewhat under the radar is the appeal! With 79,824 actual documented miles, its no wonder this Mustang is in such great original condition.
This car has a super clean interior; everything is in great, original condition! Any Fox Mustang aficionado has already noticed the most important thing about the interior: it's black. A seldom found option, the full black interior looks fantastic against the vibrant exterior. Everything is in nice, presentable condition for the age of the car. Essentially, it is exactly what you would expect to see in a largely unmolested low-mileage unrestored car. The radio has been swapped out for a modern Kenwood unit; one of the very few, easily reversible changes that have been made to this car. There's just something different about driving an original car! A quick turn of the key and it suddenly feels like the 1990s again.
Pop open the hood and you'll see the iconic Ford 5.0L V8 that sits in the engine bay. Remember what we said about flying under the radar? Everything is clean under the hood and look at our "Does It Work?" checklist below, everything from the A/C to the horn functions as it should. Bolted to the engine is not an unexciting auto, but rather the fun 5-speed manual. Like the rest of the car, the engine and engine bay remain mostly original save for a cold air intake and Ford Performance spark plug wires. Were an individual seeking to put it back to fully stock, a simple set of plug wires and original air box would do the trick. Last but not least, this Mustang sounds amazing with a set of Flowmasters on the chrome-tipped dual exhaust system! It isn't deafening, but has a wonderful tone to it. Everything that has been changed about this car has been subtle, and it is an absolute blast to drive.
This little Mustang runs and drives great. It would be a serious challenge to find another one this simple and clean for sale right now! Black interior, 5-speed transmission, turn-key, and you couldn't ask for a more well-kept original example of a Foxbody Mustang in this price range. Four different vehicle history reports accompany it documenting the low mileage! This Mustang has clearly been cared for, and all it needs is a new caretaker.
