The 1957 - 1963 Ferrari 250 GT California Spider introduced the concept of a very basic, open top, sporty Ferrari to the world. The California is among the most beloved of all Ferrari models and certainly one of the most valuable automobiles on the planet.
In 2008 Ferrari introduced a new California as a spiritual successor to the original, only this time, basic wasn't in the conversation. Conversely, the new California was aimed at the driver who wanted a comfort tuned Ferrari they could use as daily transportation. Enhancing the comfort factor, Ferrari added a retractable hardtop for ultimate pleasure in all weather conditions.
Performance was not abandoned in the pursuit of comfort, it was embraced. For the first time in a production Ferrari, a front mid mounted V-8 engine configuration was used. The engine was a 460 hp 4.3 liter V8 that was mated to a new 7 speed transaxle. The transmission featured a manual and an automatic mode. The package moved the California from 0 to 100 kilometers in a scant 4 seconds.
