Ford had beaten Chevrolet in the sales war with their Thunderbird outselling the Corvette for the first three years of the Thunderbirds existence. The Thunderbird was quickly becoming a crowd favorite, production numbers and sales would prove that to be true for years to come. In 1958 Ford kept rolling out Thunderbirds in their largest production run yet.
The 1958 model was launched with the new four-passenger model, because the two-seater personal luxury car was putting a limit on sales. The Thunderbird remained a two-door hardtop, but it did increase in size and weight. The wheelbase was now 11.0 inches longer and 1,000 pounds heavier. A new motor was in the lineup for the Thunderbird; a 300 horsepower 352-ci V8 motor with the choice of a 3-speed manual or an automatic Transmission.
