It was a breakthrough year for the 1955 Corvette. It could now be had with a 195hp V8 that actually improved front to rear weight distribution. The new V8s came with oversized ‘V’ emblems over the Chevy logo on the lower front fenders. The V8 option was a big push from better performing European roadsters.
Also for 1955, a new 3-speed manual transmission was available appeasing the many sports car enthusiasts.
With many ’54 Vettes still sitting on lots, production for the 1955s were cut, with the majority of them being the V8 option (it’s been reported that as few as six with the 6-cylinder were produced), which added $135 to the base price. Zora Arkus-Duntov, an engineer on the Corvette and former European road racer, is credited with saving the car by not only adding the new V8, but also improving handling. He has become known as the “grandfather of the Corvette.”
